What is Crying Obsidian? What They Do & How To Get It

In this article, we will discuss what Crying Obsidian is, its uses, and most importantly, how to obtain it. Crying Obsidian has been the topic to discuss amongst the Miners around the globe.

Crying Obsidian“……The name sounds like it just fell out of some kind of Dungeon and Dragons game, and it can be used for concocting powerful potions or could be used for summoning dangerous creatures from the depths of hell.

But fear not, fellow miners, this is a new block that can be used for building Portals, which was introduced in Minecraft’s new Nether Update, and it’s all the rave ever since it came out, due to its rarity in the Minecraft World.

Let’s Get Started!

What is Minecraft?

We would like to say a word or two about Minecraft for the newbies who stumbled here without any idea whatsoever about the game or even the genre. Minecraft, developed by Mojang Studios, has achieved cult status as the standard version of a Sandbox video game.

The game was officially launched way back in 2011, but it still remains a favourite for many among the gaming community. The game has received several awards along the way, especially the BAFTA Games Award for Best Family and Social Game.

The world of Minecraft has been expanding over the decade and has added a lot to its arsenal with new contents, modes, materials, and locations. It’s almost impossible to cover the whole thing, and it ain’t surprising if you haven’t heard about some material in the Minecraft world, even if you were an experienced miner.

What is Crying Obsidian?

Now the reader might be wondering what’s all this noise about some block in the gaming world.

Crying Obsidian

The Crying Obsidian block is not your standard run-of-the-mill Obsidian block from the Minecraft World, as it can not be used to build Nether Portals like the others.

But, the Crying Obsidian block represents a regular Obsidian used for Nether transport extensively, making it release little tiny purple particles to its surrounding area continuously ( which is purely for decorative purposes, by the way) , crying appearance and the name.

In other words, It is a luminous variant of obsidian that can be used to craft a respawn anchor, as quoted in Minecraft speak.

Please note that Crying obsidian can only be mined using a diamond or Netherite pickaxe. Still, they usually take less time to mine than any regular obsidian, so that’s an equal trade-off between effort and the time taken.

What Does Crying Obsidian Do?

How to Use Crying Obsidian

These purple blocks may look like they can be used as a decoration for your structures, but they can actually come in handy for building portals into the Nether.

The Crying Obsidian can also emit light to a level of 10, but it isn’t enough to melt snow or ice, but it can be used to light dark rooms and even grow crops.

It is also very resilient, more than what you would ever expect from a regular Obsidian Block. It has a blast resistance of 1,200, which means it cannot be destroyed by the Ender dragon, Creepers, Ghasts, or even hardcore explosives like TNT.

It can also be used for respawning the player by fusing 6 Crying Obsidian with 3 Glowstone, which can be further used for crafting a Respawn Anchor.

This can be utilized to respawn in the Nether. When a player dies, a Glowstone is used up along with it, and the player must recharge it by placing more Glowstone in the block ( It can hold up to a maximum of 4 Glowstone at a time).

Crying obsidian can also be placed under note blocks as they can produce “bass drum” sounds.

Where Can I Find Crying Obsidian?

There are only three known ways to obtain this block, and all three of these aren’t that reliable, which is why the block is a rarity in the Minecraft World, as you can get your mitts on them that easily.

Those 3 ways are –

  • They can be found in chests in Bastion Remnants.
  • They are gained due to bartering with Piglins, but even that has only a 9 per cent possibility of getting 1 to 3 crying obsidian for a single gold nugget.
  •   They can be found in Ruined Portals, where they are generated naturally. When you enter a Ruined Portal, you will find these purple Obsidians next to the lava, as they are created when water is present near a Lava source block.

Minecraft has many Game modes, which includes a survival mode. Players compete with each other to acquire resources to build the world and maintain health, and a free for all creative mode, where players have unlimited resources to build and create whatever their heart desires.

Players can also modify the game to create new gameplay mechanics, items, and assets. In 2014, both Mojang and their game Minecraft were purchased by Microsoft for $2.5 billion.

Many spin-off games have also been produced, such as Minecraft: Story Mode, Minecraft Dungeons, and Minecraft Earth.
